The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has extended its filing deadline for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policyholders in Louisiana impacted by recent flooding, the insurance department announced.
The NFIP normally requires homeowners to file a Proof of Loss form to claim damages within 60 days of a flood. At the request of Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon, FEMA authorized an additional 180-day extension during which a policyholder may submit the form.
“The extension applies to Louisiana policyholders who submit claims related to rains beginning on May 16, 2015, through June 16, 2015,” Donelon said in a statement released by the Louisiana Department of Insurance.
A NFIP policyholder who suffered a loss on June 8, 2015, now has until Feb. 2, 2016, to complete and submit their Proof of Loss form. This document substantiates the insurance claim and is required before the NFIP will make payment.
With this extension, an NFIP policyholder now has a total of 240 days after the date of loss to provide a completed Proof of Loss form.
