Texas Extends Deadline in Windstorm Insurance Board Search

August 19, 2015

The Texas Department of Insurance is extending its deadline for accepting applications for the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association board to September 1. The original deadline for applications was Aug. 15.

The board is being revamped as a result of the passage by the Legislature this year of Senate Bill 900, which makes various changes to TWIA operations, including the makeup of the board.

Under SB 900 the board will include:

  • Three board members who live in coastal counties, including one who is a licensed property and casualty insurance agent;
  • Three board members who live at least 100 miles from the coast; and
  • Three insurance industry representatives who write and renew windstorm and hail insurance along the Gulf Coast. These members must be nominated by insurers that are members of TWIA.

All members of the TWIA board must have demonstrated experience in insurance, general business, or actuarial principles as well as their individual area of expertise. The new board terms will begin Oct. 1.
