Memorial Services Held in Elba, Ala. for Jack Brunson

Jack Rushing Brunson, 77, former CEO of the National Security Group in Elba, Ala. died on March 1 at Flowers Hospital in Dothan, Ala. Rev. Mart Gray officiated at March 6 memorial services for Brunson at the First Baptist Church in Elba, Ala. at 2 p.m. Brunson retired in 1999 as CEO of the National Security Group and began his career with the National Security Insurance Company in Elba in 1953.

After the memorial services, friends were received at the Fellowship Hall. The Brunson family will receive friends at their residence at 1192 Pine Circle in Elba after 2 p.m. each afternoon through March 12.

Brunson was a graduate of Starke Military School in Montgomery, attended Troy State College, and earned a BS degree in Business from The University of Alabama. He has remained an active supporter of The University of Alabama, and was serving on the President’s Cabinet and the Board of Visitors for the College of Commerce and Business Administration at the time of his death.

He was a long-time member of the University Of South Alabama Board Of Trustees. He had served continuously as a USA board member since being appointed in 1989 and served as board chairman from 1998 to 2001.

Brunson is a former Mayor of Elba, and was a Dale Carnegie instructor for many years.

“Jack Brunson was a tireless supporter and advocate for the University of South Alabama. His efforts achieved what he desired most,–greatly improved opportunities for the people of his home state, which he loved so much,” USA President Gordon Moulton, said. “We will miss Jack’s humor, positive attitude and fundamental belief that a person can achieve anything through hard work. The University family is saddened by his loss, and thankful for his many contributions.”

Survivors include his wife, Edna Allen Brunson of Elba; daughter, Barbara Allen Brunson (Sydney Smith) of Birmingham, Ala.; son, Jack Edward Brunson (Jane) of Elba; daughter-in-law, Janie Palmer Brunson Hazelwood (Terry) of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; sister-Marjorie Brunson Pittman of Enterprise, Ala.; sister, Pat Brunson Folmar of Goshen, Ala.; grandson-Jack Rushing Brunson, II of Elba; granddaughter, Ella Blake Brunson of Elba; granddaughter, Meredith Allen Brunson of Elba; granddaughter, Mary Ballard Brunson of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and grandson, Edward Franklin Brunson of Elba. Brunson was preceded in death by a son, William Barry Brunson, three brothers-William Lister Brunson, Jerry Burton Brunson and Grover Brunson.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Jack R.
