An arson fire caused about $10,000 in damage at the Georgetown, Ga., City Hall, officials said Wednesday.
A large amount of impounded illegal drugs was taken from the evidence room in the building before the blaze was set sometime overnight, the state Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner’s office said.
“We’re treating this as an especially serious crime,” Commissioner John Oxendine said. “We’ll be expending every effort to bring to justice any criminals who would be so foolish as to attack a city hall.”
Oxendine’s office was assisting the Quitman County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation of the fire in the county seat, which is located along the Chattahoochee River about 40 miles south of Columbus.
Rewards of up to $10,000 are given by the Georgia Arson Control Board for information leading to the arrest and conviction of an arsonist, Oxendine said.
