Republican State Senator and businessman Ralph Hudgens, who is Senate chairman of the Insurance and Labor Committee, is running to be Georgia’s next insurance commissioner.
Hudgens, of Hull, was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1996 where he served until his election to the state Senate in 2002.
Hudgens started and ran a private business, Quality Propane, Inc., which he sold in 1987. Today, he owns and operates several other businesses.
He has served as a GOP delegate at the local, state and federal level.
Hudgens announcement said he will work for affordable property/casualty and health insurance and a high risk pool for health insurance.
GAMPAC, the Medical Association of Georgia’s political action committee, has endorsed Hudgens.
Hudgens is not alone in his pursuit of the insurance post, which is being vacated by John Oxendine, who is running for governor.
Two other Republicans– Peachtree City Mayor Harold Logsdon and state Senator Seth Harp– have also announced as candidates for the job.
Also, Mary Squires, a former Democratic state lawmaker who now lobbies for the self-insurance industry, is also running.
