Two Kanawha County agencies have decided not to use a state-created insurance program for workers’ compensation coverage.
Both have told BrickStreet Mutual Insurance Co. that its proposed rates have prompted them to take their business elsewhere.
State lawmakers created BrickStreet in 2006 in a move to privatize the state’s workers’ compensation program. The company is the sole provider of such insurance for government agencies until July 1, when the market will open to competition.
The Kanawha County Board of Education decided to drop BrickStreet after its bid was the highest of eight offered.
Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper says higher price, and BrickStreet’s decision to increase rates for volunteer fire departments prompted the switch.
