The ride-sharing service Uber has started in four South Carolina cities.
Service began last week in Charleston, Columbia, Greenville and Myrtle Beach.
Those needing ride use an app on a smartphone and the service connects them with the closet driver. Rides are paid for with a credit card connected to the app.
Taxi companies licensed by local governments say Uber is unfair competition.
The state Office of Regulatory Staff requires companies and drivers to have a certificate showing they’ve been inspected, had a criminal background check and are insured. Uber provides insurance and requires a background check, but does not require a certificate.
The city of Charleston has told the company drivers need a chauffeur’s license. City officials said they will cite any drivers they find without the special license.
