How many of the gun deaths were due to crime and how many were suicides?

How many were accidental shootings? How many times do we hear of a 5 year-old who shoots his 3 year-old sister because the parents were too stupid to lock it up? We can’t get those figures because the NRA won’t let the figures be kept. Gotta love our gutless legislators!

And of that number of suicides, how many could have been prevented if the gun wasn’t so readily available? We’ll never know the answer to that question.

Your off-handed comment about “prevention” is speculation at best, underscored by the absurd suggestion that if there wasn’t a firearm handy then there would have been no suicide. Blaming the presence of a firearm for suicide is simple denial of the mental sickness that is the REAL cause of suicide. Guns account for 50% of all suicides in the USA, and that’s because the firearm is simple and effective. Other means of suicide include hanging, wrist slashing, chemical consumption, leaping from heights, etc. 3 times the number of people attempt suicide by other means than a gun but are not successful.

          2lanelover,
I agree with most of what you write above. I’m just saying, because of its effectiveness, had there not been a gun, how many of those suicides could have been prevented? Some choose the gun simply because it’s quick and they don’t have the guts to use another method of offing themselves. I am not blaming the gun on all suicides. I’m just wondering how many less suicides there might have been should a gun not been available to the person who felt the need to call it quits.

How many involved guns bought at a firearm show where the seller didn’t have to complete a background check?

    How many involved insane people?

I ask (as a gun-owner) about these only because that’s what Da Bossman wanted to ‘regulate’.

My question is how many were gang or drug related. Cut down on these crimes I’m sure that percentage will drop dramatically. I agree a child shooting another child because stupid parents not locking guns up should be charges agaist the parent.

IJ just had a story today of top 100 most dangerous cities. Memphis, TN. ranked 6th. They are known to have multiple gangs and Memphis and drug crimes are very high there. So yes they kind of are known for their gangs.

Those people were not killed by guns. They were killed by the people pulling the trigger.

Odd that in both 2004 and 2014 the same number(906)of people died in car accidents but the vehicle accident numbers were different. Makes you wonder if their records are right or if they are pulling numbers out of the air to make a case.

Mac, if you really did that, you’re a huge A-hole. If you didn’t, you’re, well, still a huge A-hole.

Cars also have more in terms of safety features (seat belt, air bags, etc.) that, although individuals are in a accident, lead to a lower chance of a fatality. Guns are pretty cut and dry for the most part, we’re not all running around wearing bulletproof clothing
