Deputy Commissioner George Grays has added his resignation to the current tumult at California Insurance Commissioner Chuck Quackenbush’s office. In a statement released April 13, Grays said: “My continued service may only serve as a distraction from the critically important consumer protection work Commissioner Quackenbush is doing on behalf of underserved communities and earthquake and Holocaust victims.”
Grays reportedly played a role in facilitating controversial donations made by insurers to an educational foundation set up by Quackenbush. These donations are now under scrutiny from the State Assembly panel and the Attorney General’s office.
Lawmakers have delayed approval of the Commissioner’s $157.7-million budget pending the outcome of the investigations.
