Safeco Announces Service Enhancements for Active Duty Military Customers

April 10, 2003

Safeco has announced a package of service enhancements for its customers on active military duty serving in the current Persian Gulf conflict.

“It’s important in times of conflict that the men and women on active duty in the armed forces be able to carry out their service and know that day-to-day personal business back home is being looked after,” said Safeco Personal Insurance President Mike LaRocco.

For active duty military customers involved in the conflict and who have personal insurance products, Safeco will modify several underwriting guidelines to help prevent disruptions in coverage. The support includes:

-Pro-rating calculation of premium returned to these customers when they request a temporary cancellation of coverage.

-Reinstating coverage at any time without penalties for cancellations due to active military duty.

-Temporarily reducing coverage; for example, scaling back auto insurance to only comprehensive.

-Increased flexibility in securing routine underwriting information,
such as policy signatures, which may be delayed due to military
service.

The modified underwriting guidelines apply to all personal insurance products, including homeowners, renter, auto, watercraft, motorcycle and recreational vehicle.

Policyholders on active duty aren’t required to suspend or temporarily cancel coverage. Whenever they want to change coverage or restart a policy, they just need to let Safeco know of their status to take advantage of these guidelines. Safeco homeowners, condo and renter policies cover customers’ belongings and provide comprehensive personal liability coverage worldwide.
