Its interesting that all operators and pedicabs a looked at as the same. There is no standard of things to look at like BRAKES? Some operators are ding a great job on running a business and this operator who refused to get some as important a FRONT BRAKE. Has anyone every looked at the differences or do all operator have to suffer from one operator who has no idea what he is doing?

    care to explain yourself?

suggestion: stop, take a deep breath… start over… and use full sentences.

as of now, i can’t tell what the hell you’re talking about, as there is no mention of any lack of brakes in this article.

call me overly sensitive, but did they have to quote the bike messenger? Using the word “retarded” isn’t the most PC nomenclature for somebody that did something insanely stupid.

I feel for the visitor and his family. What a tragedy.

I don’t see the IJ “back-pedaling” on the quote. Either way the 23 year old is a jackass.

Methinks, Cartman, that the pedicab was supplied with brakes, otherwise he would have difficulty stopping under any means. The problem here is that the brakes he had were most likely the same brakes that all pedicab drivers operate with – the standard brakes supplied with the bicylce. These brakes are not sufficient to stop the bicycle when being pushed down a steep grade with the weight of three fully grown people.

Either they need specific routes they are not do deviate from to avoid these hills or they need sufficient brake power to handle the hill. Or both.

lastbat…. You are showing your lack of knowlege of bikes (pedicabs). NO ONE should be using a BAND brake. A metal strap around a drum. First used on wagons in the say… in the 1800’s. MOST real pedicabs use modern brakes like on a motorcycle, with a front brake for a backup. This pedicab was a joke and would have not EVER carried people. All it was good for was a planter for someones front yard.

Where in the article does it say the pedicab was equiped with “Band” brakes?

I would never ever consider using a pedicab with a BAND Brake. Its a joke! No front brake as just plan stupid if not just crazy.

I am so sorry for the loss of this family.

Our illustrious city council and Large mayor, the father of a convicted felon, worry more about stores using plastic bags then the serious things…So beware while in Seattle…Ask if the Mayor and council are actually working or playing at running a city..

    Thanks jp… I will slow a bit.

I just bothers me that when getting quotes for insurance, I try to do everything right in my operation. Careful maintainence, years of experience in the indrustry, years and years as a bike mechanic, training of drivers, follow all the rules, and quality equiptment. I get no credit or discounts for doing it right. Then someone who operates a pedicab that has no business even taking people across the street has an issue, we are all grouped together. Now everyone wants to look at this thing in Seattle and the norn of operators and pedicabs. It just bothers me, like you would not believe.
