Doris Sutton, 43, of Sacramento, Calif., has been sentenced for stealing insurance premiums from 13 victims, the California Department of Insurance reported. Sutton was sentenced to serve 180 days in county jail, five years probation and ordered to pay $41,923 in restitution on January 5.

A CDI investigation revealed that between April 2007 and April 2008, Sutton collected insurance premium payments from 13 clients, and failed to remit the premiums to an insurance carrier. After pocketing the funds, Sutton issued bogus certificates of liability and automobile insurance coverage. Additionally, she transacted insurance business, collected premiums and issued certificates without a valid insurance license.

This case was prosecuted by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
