I applaud Poizner in his efforts to rasonably hold down the costs of workers comp insurance. I own a small business and workers comp costs almost destroyed us during the Davis administration. Back then I made a suggestion to Garimendi that the legislature should consider abandoning workers comp and allow small businesses to offer 75/25 health insurance instead. I could cover every worker I have if I didn’t have to pay workers comp insurance as well as the lion’s share (75%) of their health insurance. It should not matter where and when you were injured, the important thing is that you should be able to see your own doctor in a timely manner. Our goal is to keep our co-workers healthy, safe and working.
We already have Cal Osha to keep the workplace safe. We have disability to kick in when you are unable to work because of a health-related problem. Disability (the name would have to be changed if the departments were merged and streamlined) could essentially replace the workers comp department and we could avoid paying double insurance. I am sure that there has to be a reason why no-fault employer 75/25 health insurance has not been considered. I would just like to know why…
    Thank you
