State officials say a data breach could affect as many as 97,000 Utahns who receive benefits through the state Department of Workforce Services.
JPMorgan Chase notified the department last week that its servers affecting UCard customers were hacked from July 17 to Sept. 17 and personal information may have been “inappropriately accessed.”
The UCard is an electronic payment card that provides funds for training, unemployment insurance and payroll for some employees. It’s similar to a debit card and is managed by JPMorgan.
Department officials say Utah’s pool of affected customers ranges from 3,000 to 97,000.
But JPMorgan officials say the database is now secure and there is no evidence of data misuse or improper activity.
Still, the company will provide one year of free credit monitoring for customers potentially affected by the breach.
The breach occurred at the website where Utahns apply for the UCard, and UCard users are being advised to monitor their accounts for unusual activity.
