The amount a Kentucky jury awarded to the family of a 92-year old man who died after nine days in a nursing home because the staff neglected him. The nursing home said it plans to appeal.

$80 Million

The amount a Florida jury awarded the daughter of a deceased smoker in a lawsuit against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. The award includes $8 million in compensatory damages and $72 million in punitive damages. The case is one of about 8,000 similar lawsuits in Florida that are being tried individually because the state Supreme Court in 2006 threw out a huge $145 billion class-action damage award for all Florida smokers.

The home insurance rate hike request from Allstate Property and Casualty Insurance Co. denied by Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney. Now Allstate wants someone other than Chaney to conduct a public hearing into the denial because when Chaney rejected the rate hike in September he said he would not approve the hike without a court order.

The amount oil giant BP says it has paid thus far for grants, claims and recovery costs in Alabama from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico so. The largest amount, nearly $420 million, went directly to businesses and individuals filing claims.

The insurance limit carried by celebrity wrestler Hulk Hogan, whose attorneys have added his ex-wife as a defendant to his lawsuit against Wells Fargo Insurance Services for allegedly failing to adequately protect his fortune. Hogan paid more than his policy limit to settle a lawsuit after his son was in a car crash in 2007. The lawyers allege that his wife was responsible along with Wells Fargo for his inadequate coverage because she was also the couple’s business manager.

The number of complaints about Internet crimes that have been filed with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) since it became operational in 2000. The majority involve fraud in which the complainant incurred a financial loss.
