CDI criminal investigators arrested Tracy Denise Thorton of Sacramento on two counts of insurance fraud and one count of filing a false police report. Thorton, 23, surrendered to authorities and was booked into the Sacramento County Jail. Bail was set at $5,000. The Sacramento District Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case.
In January 2000, Thorton reported to the California Highway Patrol that her car had been stolen in Sacramento. The following month, she reported the theft of the vehicle to her insurance carrier. Thorton reported she had driven her vehicle to her place of work, where it was subsequently stolen. She made statements and submitted documents to her insurance carrier to support this false claim.
A CDI investigation revealed Thorton lied about the facts surrounding the alleged loss of her vehicle. Investigators determined the vehicle was purchased for Thorton’s boyfriend using her credit. Although the vehicle was registered to Thorton, she and her boyfriend agreed the vehicle was always to be in his possession. She admitted to investigators to not driving the vehicle the day of the alleged loss. Although her boyfriend had always been in possession of the vehicle, she admitted wanting the car back because he allegedly was not paying her as agreed.
