Nahu Bautista, 26, of Fontana, was arrested on two counts of insurance fraud for allegedly paying someone to get rid of his vehicle for him.
Bautista later filed a stolen vehicle report with the Fontana Police Department and his insurance company, Republic Western.
Investigators worked with the CDI’s Fraud Division’s Mexican Liaison Team, and discovered that Bautista’s car had already been recovered in Mexico prior to the filing of the stolen report.
The claim, which remains unpaid, could have amounted to over $4,000.
The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case.
