$30 to $140

An analysis by the Romney administration found that many Massachusetts low-income residents will have to pay from $30 to $140 a month under the state’s new mandatory health care plan, according to The Boston Sunday Globe.

The U.S. Supreme Court signaled its return to the thorny issue of high punitive damages, agreeing to review a $79.5 million verdict against Philip Morris USA for the death of a single Oregon smoker. The court added Philip Morris USA v. Mayola Williams to its docket for the fall, responding to pleas by the business community for clearer guidance on when punitive damages are excessive.

Allstate Insurance Co. announced it is dropping earthquake insurance to most of its 407,000 quake customers nationwide as a part of a larger move to reduce its exposure to catastrophic losses.

The average payout for all liability awards increased almost 30 percent in 2004 to $459,000, according to the Medical Society of the State of New York.

Boston-based broker William Gallagher Associates is helping to sponsor of the Cow Parade in Boston, one of the world’s largest public art events. WGA’s sponsored “Trojan Cow,” created by artist Kathryn Field, will be on display through Sept.10 in South Station. It is one of more than 100 life-size cows created by local and national artists. Boston’s Cow Parade features cows grazing public areas of Boston during the summer months. Following their showing, the cows will be rounded up for a good ole’ fashioned cattle auction and sold to the highest bidder. All proceeds will benefit the Jimmy Fund.
