Fined levied by Connecticut officials against a man who runs businesses paying for hole-in-one prizes on behalf of clients. The state Insurance Department says Kevin Kolenda’s businesses equated to illegally offering insurance without a license. The state says he also failed to pay hole-in-one prizes for the 2007 Travelers Championship tournament and a 2008 tournament in Trumbull. Kolenda told The Hartford Courant that he is no longer affiliated with the companies and that the state’s allegations against him are “insane.”

Percentage of government workers in Virginia who reported an injury of illness on the job in 2007 — a substantial difference compared with the 3.2 percent of private employees who made similar reports. In all, 104,200 workers in the state were injured or became ill on the job that year.

Number of unqualified drivers who were given commercial drivers licenses by the state of New York during a three-year period between 2005 and 2008, according to an audit. Of the 894 tests given during the time, 14 were incorrectly graded. Nine of the drivers received commercial licenses, despite being unqualified, and five were given special approval for things like transporting hazardous waste.

Number of cars involved in a massive pileup on a snow-covered section of Interstate 93 in Derry, New Hampshire earlier this month. More than 100 people were injured. Eight trucks, three buses and two tractor-trailers were also involved in the pileup.

Weight, in pounds, of Apollo, an escaped circus tiger who fled from his cage onto the Jackie Robinson Parkway in New York City in July 2004, causing a series a multi-car accident. The owners of the tiger reached a $935,000 settlement earlier this month with the drivers injured during the escape.
