$5 Million

The estimated cost of repairs and clean-up at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale as a result of high winds that tore through the campus in May. Much of that total will go to fix broken windows and roof damage. At least $1 million will be spent on clean-up efforts. As many as 1,000 healthy trees were lost in the powerful storm, most of them within Thompson Woods and around Campus Lake. SIU’s Agriculture Department took some of the hardest hits. The main building will need at least $300,000 in repairs, and the university farm area lost several assets, including a feed mill used for the dairy, swine and equine centers. A new feed mill could cost between $200,000 and $300,000. AP
