New residential property insurance amendatory endorsements adding $5,000 in “law and ordinance” coverage to standard homeowners and dwelling policy forms are now mandatory with policies written or renewed effective April 1, 2001. Texas insurers may discontinue using the endorsements when the amended language has been incorporated into the applicable policy forms. The law and ordinance language must be rolled into the forms by April 1, 2002. Insurance Commissioner Jose Montemayor has also adopted optional endorsements for use when customers want to purchase more than $5,000 in law and ordinance coverage.
