Fitch affirmed the ratings of American International Group Inc. (AIG) and its insurance subsidiaries.
The ratings are supported by AIG’s placement as the preeminent U.S.-based global insurance organization with excellent worldwide brands and franchises, strong balance sheet fundamentals and very good operating results. Also, the organization exhibits strong underwriting skills and adept reinsurance management.
Fitch favorably views the diversified nature of the organization’s products, distribution systems and geographic reach. The diversification contributes to AIG’s ability to generate stable and predictable operating results, as well as develop a broad and deep management team.
Partially offsetting these positives are ongoing exposure to asbestos and environmental (A&E) liabilities and the weak, though improving, operating environment in the domestic property casualty industry. Also considered is the increasing group leverage from affiliated operations.
