Douglas J. Gant is the 2002 recipient of the Jack F. Derrickson Award for Outstanding Course Leadership given by the American Institute for CPCU and the Insurance Institute of America (IIA). Gant is a team manager with State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in Bakersfield, Calif.
The Derrickson Award, which is given annually, honors a teacher of insurance courses (1) whose students pass national Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and IIA examinations at a rate higher than the national average; (2) who receives excellent evaluations from his or her course sponsor and students; (3) who has a command of course content and the ability to convey knowledge to students; and (4) who shows a personal interest in students that fosters development of their self-esteem, encourages their interest in learning and professional development, and motivates them to complete their educational program.
Gant will receive a check for $500, a plaque, and a trip to Orlando, Fla., in October to attend the CPCU Society’s Annual Meeting and Seminars and the American Institute for CPCU’s conferment ceremony.
The award is named for Jack F. Derrickson, who graded CPCU and IIA examinations for 38 years and taught insurance courses through the Insurance Society of Philadelphia. For the last 20 years of his career, he was with General Accident Insurance in Philadelphia. Derrickson funded this award to recognize excellence in course leadership.
Gant joined State Farm in 1970 as a field property claim representative. In 1981, he was promoted to assistant superintendent. In 1984, he was promoted to superintendent. He has worked in the California cities of Los Angeles, San Jose, Santa Maria, San Francisco, Sacramento, and Bakersfield. He received the CPCU Society’s Leadership Recognition Award in 1992. He received a Professional Leadership Scroll in 1999 from the American Institute for CPCU and was named to its National Registry of Outstanding Course Leaders in 2001.
