Fugitive financier Martin Frankel, whose extradition from Germany to face charges of multiple insurance fraud is being sought by the U.S., has appealed his three year prison sentence handed down by a German Court on unrelated charges. Frankel previously pleaded guilty to possessing false passports and failing to declare the value of a cache of diamonds he took with him to Germany.
Arguments on the appeal could be heard within a month, and a decision made by the end of September. In the meantime Frankel continues to fight extradition to the U.S. to face the numerous state and federal charges against him. While Germany and the U.S. have long-standing extradition treaties, Frankel claims that the possibility that he may be given a life term in the U.S. violates German law, and thus prevents the courts from ordering his extradition.
