MIIX Reorganization Endorsed by InterMedix

May 14, 2002

Even as it winds down its 25 year life as one of New Jersey’s leading medical malpractice insurers (See IJ Website May 10 and 7), the Lawrenceville based MIIX Group is receiving new support for the resurrected, physician-owned, company it hopes to have up and running by August.

MIIX has received the”strong approval” of InterMedix, a NJ-based musculoskeletal specialty care network, comprised of orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, neurologists, physiatrists, and podiatrists, for its plan to raise capital for a physician-supported medical professional liability company. The InterMedix board of directors unanimously endorsed the new MIIX initiative.

The vote of support for MIIX is the third it’s received from a physicians group. The Medical Society of New Jersey’s House of Delegates expressed its approval at a meeting on May 3rd, and MIIX received a unanimous endorsement from the board of the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society on May 6th.

MIIX CEO and new Board Chairman Patricia A. Costante noted that, “We are gratified by the pace at which physicians and their organizations are joining in support of our new plan. With every meeting and each encounter we have with New Jersey physicians, we are winning more and more support for the new company.”

“Formation of a new company supported by physicians will help stabilize the medical malpractice insurance market in New Jersey,” stated Dr. Bernard A. Rineberg, an InterMedix board member and past president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

“It will stabilize premiums and, in so doing, support the practice of medicine. It will also allow us to sustain our long alliance with MIIX management to pursue legislation that enacts a reasonable cap on non-economic damages, a meaningful statute of limitations and professional standards for expert witnesses,” Rineberg added.
