Which is worse? Catching a whiff of second-hand smoke in a public park (indoor bans I have no problem with), or losing our right to choose, yes even the right to be stupid, gradually, continually being watched over by our big brother legislators, who don’t really give a rip about our health, just what will get them re-elected. As we have seen, next in line is fast food/junk foods/alchohol (Kennedy may vote against that one).

I couldn’t agree with Bob more. It’s perfectly reasonable to ban smoking in certain indoor environments (the workplace). However, this legislation goes too far. Banning smoking in a bar? By all means, destroy your liver, but watch out for your lungs! How ludicrous!Where does the line between protecting the health of the general public cross over into infringement of individual’s rights?

I am not against people smoking at all. As a matter of fact people can smoke all they want… just not around other people who don’t want to breathe their smoke.
Have you ever noticed people smoking in their cars? The first thing they do is crack the window. Why? Even they can’t stand the smell. The smell of a carcinogen.
(I see adults smoking around their children every single day–in their cars and in public).
Have you considered the people who work in bars/restaurants with smoking? They shouldn’t have to sacrifice breathing smoke-filled air in order to have a job. If you think they should just “go find another job,” then tell yourself that.
Breathing air free of secondhand smoke is a right we should all have. Where you can breathe shouldn’t be something you have to decide upon. Breathing is a pretty fundamental part of living don’t you think?
So go ahead and smoke the tobacco that you may very well be addicted to. But please, practice your addiction by yourself. Thank you.

I think its a stupid idea to ban places from smoking. It should be the judgement call of an owner of a resturant, bar, club, etc… on if they permit it or not. If someone doesn’t like smoke then go somewhere where they don’t permit it but don’t take all smoking privleges away. It’s just as unfair to make people go outside to smoke then not going somewhere to not smell it.

You are an idiot if you think its unfair for people not being able to smoke. Do you not comprehend that smoke causes cancer? Or in other words; its fair for people to have to die because morons such as yourself are slowly committing suicide don’t mind taking others with them? Why should we go somewhere else? How about YOU go somewhere else? Maybe you should spend most of your time in the shower, because you must reek of an ashtray if you smoke that much.

We’ve tried this once—it was called prohibition–it didn’t work too well—but it did drive countless great clubs out of business
Same thing will happen here–Providencer will lose many good night clubs
Maybe if we’re lucky. organized crime will step in and correct the situation—I can see it now—“Smoke Easy” where the music is hot, the women hotter and the air the color of the LA sky on a bad day
He said “Do you smoke after making love?” she replied”gee ,I don’t know—I never looked”
If you’re looking to ban something truely dangerous why not start with automobiles—no??— I didn’t think so.

If a waitress or anyone else does not like what is going on at their workplace they should move on. This includes smoking or ANYTHING else. What happened to a free america. What rights do we have left? We can do what the government says and thats all.

And they Say this Country Is Free.. Well thats a load of Bullsh*t. Do they expect us to put out our cigarettes when going through a drive through, Because i wont. They expect us not to smoke outside, because thats the next step. So are we gonna get arrested for smoking cigarettes?
I think the government needs to get their priorities straight. Free Country My ***!

i feel that if the owner of any establishment wants there customers to smoke they should be able to make that decision. if you dont smoke go to a smoke free place. if you dont want to work there go somewhere else. i dont think a bunch of people who dont realize the effect on business should hold that decision in there hands……we pay taxes and are just trying to survive like anyone else.

I don’t smoke myself but I don’t believe that the government should stick their noses in everything. I’m getting really sick and tired of them taking freedoms away from us slowly. Stop and think about what’s been taken away from you lately. It SHOULD be up to the owner of the establishment to decide what he/she wants to do. They pay their taxes too. If RI really cared about our health than they’d ban smoking EVERYWHERE including Lincoln Greyhound Park and Newport Grand but it’s inconvenient as income for them. I feel the establishments that will be hurt because of this should get together and close down. Then we could see how much RI would get affected when no income would be coming into the state. What do you say owners?

The main point of your argument seems to be about the establishments that you feel will be so dramatically affected by the ban – so…you really dont think they will make money anymore? People are still going to socialize and dine in restaurants. I think for you to assume that everyone who smokes is going to somehow boycott restaurants because of a law that an establishment is forced to abide is very irrational. Cant a smoker eat their meal and then step ouside? or apparently you think that it seems more appropriate for a non smoker to eat their meal then step outside to avoid one who is smoking. You then go on to suggest that you would rather see RI ban smoking everywhere with no exceptions – i think thats a great point. And about the whole ‘get together and close down’ thing – im sure that a restaurant owner would love to give up their business and source of income and go broke to make a point to RI legislation.
