I disagree that cell phones are 8th on the list of causing accidents. I believe they are one of the top three as a large percentage of all drivers are using them regularly. After driving 50,000 miles a year for many years, I would vote for this law in a heartbeat.

So if eating in your car and radio station changing are #1 & #2 – are we going to have a ban on that as well. Enough.

The difference bewteen the hand held cell phone and a “hands free” cell phone is the difference between night and day. The headline says “Cell Phones Banned” when in fact the law says, “hand-held cell phones” are a violation.

I have used both. Hand held should be banned.

All of these distractions cause accidents, but I’m with Jim about handheld phones. I’ve been in two accidents in the past two years, and in both cases, the other party caused the accident, and was talking on a cell phone.

I agree with the ban, but I don’t think hand-held is the problem. A lot of people on cell phones get in accidents not because their hands are occupied, but because their minds are elsewhere. What could be so important that you can’t pull over to make the call?

Driving 50-60K per year, and having a phone in my vechiles since 1972, i can attest that a hand held is as bad as driving with your eyes closed.

Purchased hands free for all the children, grandkids and heartily recommed their use.

Ever notice the driver in front that slows down 20 MPH when the phone rings?

Make the fine $1,000.00, and see how fast they all get headsets.

Living in a major city like Houston, you see all of the driving distractions. Hand held cell phones should be banned. Then we need to start working on shaving, applying makeup and reading the paper. 43,000 people a year die on our highways. It is one of our real problems needing more attention.

I am quite OK with the ban because i believe that both the mind and body coordination is required in its fullest to respond to an emergency situation, if u are on phone, part of your mind and part of your body is definitely not available and more than that, if the conversation is too sweet or if it is too serious, the risk only increases… Better get it banned completely

Frankly I am tired of the government making decisions for me under the false pretense \”its for my benefit\”. I am an adult and capable of making sound decisions for myself. Imposing a cell phone ban is a violation of free will. Just as murder has consequences only when you are found guilty, I think cell phone fines should only apply if you are a careless driver who causes harm to another. If the government is so concerned with our safety, then they would require car manufacturers to integrate the cell phone into the car\’s speaker system, whereby we aren\’t holding the phone in our hand, but instead the government just wants to becomes richer, because after all its a business, by approving fines for stupid violations such as J walking. Let me live free because I pay my taxes.
