Without a doubt there needs to be a speed limit or at least a seasonal one. Summertime on the lakes is no time or place to be running some of the boats that are available today for anyone to operate who has the $$$ (and not necessarily the experience). 45mph may seem a bit too low but consider that the closing speeds could approach 90 mph in a head on. If you want to go 60,70,80,90mph and even higher head for the seashore.

    1. 2006 boating accidents reports show NO collision accidents over 35 mph. Zero. A matter of fact ever since the new boater education program has been in place, accidents have been going down every year.

    2. Why 45mph, why not 55mph? No research has been done on this is the safest speed.

    3. How can it be enforced, many factors prove that enforcing the bill will be impossible.

    4. This is going on a person\’s driving record. Pretty serious, given that many boats don\’t have speedometers and anybody who\’s knows how pitot pickups work. Boat speedometers are not accurate.

    5. Vacationers. Many folks who have boats that go 50-65 mph enjoying going that speed safely, Winni is the 5th largest lake within US borders.

    6. False sense of safety. If speed is not the problem, no data shows that it is. Will everything be hunky dory after? No

    7. Water chop, repeatedly supporters state that a speed limit will make waters calmer. Anybody who knows boating, the slower you go, the Larger wake you make.

Many more reasons why a speed will do nothing but discouarge a demographic of the boating community from enjoying Winni and feel unwanted.

A quote from the bill\’s sponsor:
\”It has nothing to do with death rate, or anything else, the numbers of arrests for speed and all the rest of it. It has to with a lack of courtesy on the part of the, I’ll call them ocean going vessels, like your own, the Donzi’s and the rest of them….\”

I guess based on the boat you have, you are instantly a jerk?
