Unfortunately every year won’t be enough either…

I’m not picking on N.Y.ers, but overall 99.9% of the people don’t read past the amount due when it comes to information recevied from their insurance companies.

I believe that this law was passed with good intentions, but I agree with DWT. Insureds do not read their paperwork either when they get their policy or at renewal. Without a perceived need (Ever heard “My house will never flood”?), this new document will be ignored just like prior ones. FEMA has put a big push into training agents, which is good, but until the general populace feels they need the coverage, home and/or business owners will not entertain buying it.

Why not just print up envelopes with the phrase FLOOD IS NOT A COVERED CAUSE OF LOSS in red ink on it.

It’s not the government’s responsibility to educate people about what is excluded under an HO policy……..that’s what an agent is for. Agents escaped criticism in the Katrina debaucle when they were responsible for selling their clients a product, and not telling them where the vulnerabilities were. Do you have any idea how much a mass mailing twice a year in New York is going to cost the taxpayers? It’s easy for lawmakers and politians to pass these assinine laws when it’s somebody else’s money involved.

Some companies already send a reminder each year, which still gets ignored. Maybe the government needs to send along a Flood Map to show the areas that are most prone to Flood or target those areas with these mailings.

as soon as there is a flood everyone will have an uproar. I didn’t know that when you said flood wasn’t covered, and my house flooded, I had no coverage!! How was I supposed to know? Please make out that check to poor underpriveleged idiot who bellies up to the federal government feeding trough.

A suggestion: the IRS could make it a requried question on a 1040 or any other tax filing form. “A homeowners policy (or other property insurance) typically contains NO Flood protection coverage. If this protection is desired, it must be purchased separately, on a separate policy. Would you like someone from the federal Flood Protection Unit to contact you regarding flood protection? ___ Yes..No___
If yes, please indicate a day and evening
phone number and a valid email address where you can be reached.
