The Hartford Targets Homeowners with Electric Vehicles

The Hartford has added electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at three of its major campuses in Connecticut, an effort tied to the insurer’s decision to add EV charging equipment and green rebuilding coverage enhancements to its homeowners policies.

“Electric vehicle charging stations will soon be an integral part of the American infrastructure, both at the workplace and in the home,” said Liam E. McGee, The Hartford’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. “Installing electric vehicle charging stations and providing insurance coverage for them demonstrates our support for developing the electric vehicle market and our commitment to a cleaner environment.”

The equipment is part of a small but growing niche. The industry estimates that 27,000 EV cars will hit the road this year.

The Hartford is adding EV charger coverage to its homeowners policies, which will add chargers as covered property for new and existing customers. The Hartford is also adding a green rebuilding enhancement, which will cover the use of environmentally friendly materials and processes to make repairs after a covered loss. Both coverages will be widely available by the end of the year, The Hartford said.

The chargers, which are free to use for employees, are located at the company’s three larges Connecticut offices — Hartford, Simsbury and Windsor — where thousands of employees commute daily.
