Take it from experience. We pray that you guys get the elderly and homeless people into shelters. Please don’t count on the storm going somewhere else. Winds produce tornadoes that can damage many city structures. If you are in direct path of this storm at least get people like to the fourth and fifth floors of buildings. Streets flood quickly. Low line areas residents need to move to safer places. Oh and yes, don’t be afraid to house someone. it is better for them to be safe than to be dead.

For Chartis-AIG (or any other insurance company for that matter) to be asking their brokers to get the word out to their insured’s regarding hurricane preparedness reflects how poor the insurance industry’s loss prevention efforts really are.

There are numerous types of hurricane / flood preparedness checklists available that these companies could e-mail directly to their insured’s, instead of depending on the broker / producer to do it. Isn’t that what the regulatory exemptions granted for the industry under the McCarren Ferguson Act contemplated?

Of course, that kind of “loss control dept. service” would require a staffing effort (which translates into salaries) that the insurance companies don’t really support any longer. So much for short-sighted management practices!
