How does one just decide to bill an insurance company like this? Is it because the property insurer has a strong interest in having the fire department show up?
If this is the reason, I am going to start billing my Life insurance carrier for my meals. If I don’t eat, they have to pay out big time, so they have a vested interest in my meals.

Billing them on what basis? Sounds illegal/unconstitutional to me.

The result will be that either insurers will introduce exclusions for these charges or they’ll simply increase the premiums and people will pay for it just like they would if taxes were increased.

Sounds like gutless politicians trying to avoid doing something (increasing taxes) that might impeded their re-election.

There is a section in mosy insurance policies for fire dept charges.I believe there is a $500.00 limit. If you are paying for this service in your tax base, it is double dipping and the insurer could deny these charges

Should read “Atlantic City to Bill for Emergency Services” as an insurer may have no such obligation, considering policy language, to pay such a cahrge. Our City tried this, unsuccessfully, for a while. They then resorted to a user “fee” (“fee” we are told not to be confused with a “tax”). Everyone working within the City is charged a $2.00 per week “fee” (including we who live within the City). Not popular for many, and especially those who do not live in the city, but has passed constitutional muster.
