Dear Governor Tubby – while I think you are the greatest and hope you find a VP slot to your liking, come on. What hardship would this bill have presented? making it difficult for kids to commute to school, thereby increasing their reliance upon a parent, guardian, etc to continue to drive them a little longer? All in the name of safety? The why not just keep them off highways or limit them to short routes to or from school.

Forget about commuting to work. Most of the 16YO’s I know in NJ don’t have jobs. Its not like what we were doing back in the day. Been there, didn’t do that. They’re too busy with soccer, GameBox, etc to work, and we parents just might have coddled them a little too much.

I would like to know why the governor did not back this bill. He is usually a very reasonable public servant. Was their pork involved?

I agree with the previous comment. Teens need more time to learn how to drive responsibly. We have a similar law in KS and it presented no hardship whatsoever.

As a life-long resident of NJ, the father of 2 teens, 17 and 15, an insurance professional with 30 years experience and as the past chief and 30 year member of a fire-rescue department, the law as proposed was junk and would have been ignored.

As it is now, the current regulations on young drivers have only served to increase the average age that accidents occur. The issue is about real world experience operating a motor vehicle, driving around with your parents is only slightly better than a simulator.

This is commentary. This isn’t objective.

How about 40 hours in a classroom simulator texting and driving so they can see that it can’t be done safely. In a measured way they can see how their driving skills are diminished.
