Help me here. How could the city not know they were paying people twice? I’m wondering if any of the fraudsters worked payroll or HR? Anyone have more on the story?

There’s a big write up in the Washington Post that tells more of the story. It does not look like this was a ring, but individuals gaming the system that finally got caught. Most of them were bus drivers.

To the comment below, do you really believe that a bus driver job is political reward for helping the mayor get elected? Really?

Our tax dollars are hard at work! This happens at all levels of the government; you wonder why we’re broke? Read the following article:

If they would let an insurance company or some other business run it for a profit, this wouldn’t happen. You want a check? Prove you have actively sought employment.

If anyone expects any real or meaningful actions to be taken against these people you’ll be disappopinted. You have political people/empoloyees who were hired by politicians as a reward for helping them get elected. Fire them? Make them pay back the “stolen” monies? You’d be dreaming to expect any of this – and that’s even before we get into the issue of their unions acting up to defend these double-dippers.

May be fired! What is the delay? They have been caught in a fraudulent act. Fire the bums!

Due process. It’s a bedrock American principle. Yes, they will probably get fired if they are guilty and deservedly so. But they should all be afforded an opportunity to explain their actions.

I think their actions are pretty much cut and dry, don’t you??
