The owner of this boat should be arrested and prosecuted for criminally negligent homicide. Excuse me, who does he think he was, putting 27 people on board a 34 foot cabin cruiser designed to hold a maximum of half that number? And I’m certain that Captain Useless had nowhere near that number of life preservers on the boat. A shameless tragedy that could easily have been avoided.
You’re right, they should have had half the people and twice the life preservers. But what would proscecuting both captains for criminally negligent homicide accomplish. One lost his son and niece and anoher lost his nephew and niece. Both will have to live with this for the rest of their lives. Isn’t that punishment enough?
Overloading the boat shows a blatant disregard for human life. It’s unfortunate, but not an accident that this event occurred. It was easily preventable. It would be no different than if I chose to drink and drive and my child lost his life as a result of my concious decision to have a pop or four.
Yes it is unfortunate and was easily preventable. But I disagree that it was a blatant disregard. If this was a commercial voyage, I would agree, but it was a family outing. It was stupid, it wasn’t thought out but it was not a blatant disrgard for human life. These humans were their family, their children.
I don’t think you can beat them up anywhere near what equals how much they are beating themselves up.
