The report by Freeh regarding the PSU scandal vilified a man who is no longer able to speak for himself. It seems everyone is trying to make it look as though the entire mess is the fault of Joe Paterno.
Mr. Paterno took the information he was given – hearsay – not something he himself witnessed, and reported to those higher up in the chain of command. Should he/could he have done more? Perhaps. Mr. Paterno was known always as a fair man. As he did not witnessed the actions of Jerry Sandusky, he followed his conscience & reported the hearsay. One has to wonder if he may have taken the story with a grain of salt – the public does not know what sort of relationship Mike McQueary & Jerry Sandusky had as player and coach and later as co-coaches. If there were personality conflicts, then taking a terrible story and going up the chain was the proper way to handle it.
I would find it easier to believe in Martians than to believe Joe Paterno was in any way a party to covering up abuse of children.
