Yes, we enjoy post season play, but Penn State is about ACADEMICS before ATHLETICS! Our numbers prove that year-in and year-out. We go and watch for pride in our school and it’s history and pride in the young men that are dedicated to it regardless of what has taken place OFF THE FIELD.
As an alumn, I travel a great distance to watch at least one game there every season, and will do so this year as well. That annual trip also includes The Waffle Shop. But if you wonder why we would/should go, see how your daughter’s business feels about us not going and watching…
The football TEAM had nothing to do with the mess. We will go and watch; you will watch us because everyone wants to know what we will do – the media will make sure of that – because WE ARE…
Great idea, because none of world’s largest alumni association buys insurance. I was going to get State Farm for my new homeowner’s policy, not now. I’m also a loyal GM buyer. If they do the same I will drop them too. The actions of one sick twisted individual and some school officials should not reflect on the alumi and students!
It’s moments like these that define the difference between a “fan” and a “supporter.” Regardless of the conduct of a few individuals, albeit leaders at Penn State, the thousands of individuals from administration, professors, to student and alumni should remain steadfast Penn State supporters and hold their head high. Penn State is a great university with an outstanding reputation apart from this one very bad event. State Farm certainly has the right to pull out, but they are pulling out on the tens of thousands of individuals that truly are Penn State. What needed to happen has happened, and every university in the nation is scrambling to prevent anything like this from happening on their hallowed ground. Punish those responsible to the full extent possible and let’s move on to higher ground.
Well said. However, State Farm doesn’t sponsor thousands of individuals, it sponsors the Institution and that Institution failed miserably here. This is more than a “bad event”. We’re talking about child molestation here — just about the most heinous crime I can imagine. Sorry, but the Institution has to take its lumps and that will have the unfortunate side effect of hurting the feelings of Penn State alumni. That’s just too bad. State Farm has made the right call.
As a PSU grad, I think we just ought to shut up for a while. People and corporate sponsors are going to do what they do, and think what they think.
While a lot of things that are happening (sponsors bailing, NCAA sanctions, negative press, maybe a credit reduction), it doesn’t do Penn State’s reputation any good for us to keep complaining about “it’s not fair” or “it’s not deserved.”
It’s not a perfect world, so don’t expect perfect justice. In fact, the crimes were heinous so the punishments have to be severe. Don’t run away from dear Alma Mater, and be dignified. We don’t have to go around chest-pounding or even engaging trolls. I’m not accusing anyone on this thread of that, but it’s time we just took our lumps for a while.
I have been a policyholder for many years but yesterday informed my agent that I was cancelling my auto and homeowners. I trust that the alumni association will bring this matter to the attention of current and former Lions; hopefully, it will affect SF retention a teensy-weensy bit.
Typical State Farm!!! They bailed on the Katrina victims when they thought they were going to have to pay. They want to bail on paying their contractual obligation vis-a-vis Sandusky’s defense costs. And now they want to separate themselves from the institution that has paid them billions over the years. Could there be a more jelly-livered insurance company on the planet?
I think we should resurrect Joe McCarthy and reconvene the Senate UnAmerican Activities Committee so that we can harrass and brutalize everyone who ever had any dealings with Joe Paterno, Penn State or anyone who ever attended or worked at Penn State. The persecution by the media and others reminds me of propaganda of the Nazi Party in 1930, the Cultural Revolution and persecution of the Gang of Four in China and the witch trials in Salem, MA. Are we going to be that sick again as a society? From the reaction to date, it looks like the answer to that question is affirmative.
If I recall correctly some are still tracking down and bringing to justice the members of the Nazi Party that were instrumental in the holocaust. While not directly combarable (but since you made the comparison) shame on those that allowed the holocaust to occur and shame on those that allowed Sandusky to continue terrorizing children for so long.
What a dumb move on their part. Any Penn Stater can get insurance elsewhere. I have been with Erie insurance in Pennsylvania for decades. When you ask for a quote from other insurance companies and you tell them that you have Erie Insurance they immediately say we can’t do better than them. So go ahead and pull your ads you just lost revenue. Same goes for General Motors. I would never buy a GM product anyway.
State farm, have you checked to see how many policies you have with Penn State alumni? There are hundreds of thousands of us and competition for insurance is brutal. We are…all over the world. We are…in every imaginable industry. We are…surrounded by friends, family and co-workers who respect our opinions. Good luck with that. We are..Penn State and we are unimpressed.
WE are…state penn….I am sure all 500,000 alums are going to drop State Farm. Outside the prestine walls of Centre County, there are 300 million people who might be offended by SF advertising. Frankly, people like Dick Anderson who coached with scumdusky and your deity and people like Franco (please stop destroying your post deity reputation) will be labeled by the appromiately 300 million who find a man’s thirst for winning college football greater than his need to protect children to be simply almost as a vial as his perverted buddy. Good luck talking “we are” smack. SF made a wise decision…I am watching closely who sticks with PSU and maybe the mere 300 million others might be upset…Cancel your policies!!!!! Keep buying your peachy deity ice cream and keep going to joe ped’s library…..I remember another vial PA person in the terms of Andrew Carnegie who gave all his money to the library so people would forget how awful he was to his workers…In Carnegie’s defense at least he did not cover up for hiring a lesbian hating coach and a child molesting assistant…”we are”…”full of hate”
State Farm made the right decision here. For all you PSU whiners…if you are worried about State Farm (or any other sponsor) pulling it’s sponsorship, why don’t you begin asking All State and Geico if they are willing to step in. My guess is that they would say no as well.
Imagine, if you can….a country. One that understands the big picture – when a few individuals break the law – those few suffer the consequences of their actions.
The rest of the 280 Million forgive, forget – and move on.
Imagine……….
I don’t see how anyone could support a school that cares more about saving face then affecting the lives of its students. Education is the primary reason for school and the protection of those young people from predators is essential. So, if you covered up illegal, disgusting acts it makes me wonder what else are you covering up that is pertinent to quality of life. I wouldn’t want to associate myself with any organization that practices such immoral, inconsiderate, money-driven egotistical behavior.
I just dropped State Farm insurance and went with Geico. Many Penn State fans told me to do it, so I did it because I am a close friend with many of them (not a fan of college ball) and boy am I glad I did. Much better rates with Geico. I’ve heard that the word is out to all Penn State football fans to drop State Farm insurance because of the ban they imposed on TV sponsorship of Penn State games. The bums at State Farm couldn’t care less about the victims of Sandusky’s crimes they just want the publicity.
Seriously….? “What are you going to watch for?”

Any company that sponsors PSU should be boycotted.
I am glad I have state farm insurance and they have integrity.
