It’s probably worth noting that in Connecticut, one major TV station has been naming winter storms ever since the station was owned by a P/C insurer, whose weather department (and thus the TV station’s) had a practice of naming winter storms for internal discussion.
And then there is the University of Berlin, whose meteorologists sell naming rights to each and every low pressure system that affects the continent.
This is a marketing gimmmic by the weather channel. It
is not a “named storm” until NOAA says so. Just like the pet rock, mood ring and other fads, this to shall pass.
Giving storms a name will only increase the application of sublimits for Named Storms.
