A former University of Virginia lacrosse player convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend is being sued by American International Group Inc. over his refusal to answer questions from insurance investigators.
In a court filing Monday, the company says George W. Huguely V declined requests for questioning under oath. The company wants to be released from defending Huguely or paying damages in a wrongful-death lawsuit brought by the family of the slain Yeardley Love.
Huguely was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2010 beating death. He is serving a 23-year prison sentence. The Virginia Court of Appeals has agreed to hear Huguely’s appeal.
AIG’s Chartis Property Casualty unit filed suit in federal court in Greenbelt, Md. Chartis says Huguely’s refusal to cooperate constitutes a breach of contract under his family’s homeowners policy.
