The “Assembly” can kiss my backside. In my car, I can smoke any time I want to as it does not interfere in any way with my ability to drive. People putting on makeup SHOULD get fines because that definitely takes your eyes off the road.

Unless you drop your butt and have to look for it (or the smoke or ashes get in your eye), I agree smoking isn’t interfering with your ability to drive

I agree once the cancer stick is lit, it shouldn’t be a distraction. However, fumbling through your pocketbook or glove compartment for the lighter or pack of cigarettes could be a distraction. Lighting it as well demands some concentration. Same for cigars and pipes.

“The proposed law would fine drivers found to “engage in any activity unrelated to the operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that interferes with the safe operation of the vehicle.””

Tuning the radio or changing a track on a CD/MP3 player isn’t related to the operation of a motor vehicle…

Talking to a passenger about anything except driving conditions/other vehicles isn’t related to the operation of a motor vehicle…

Rosenblatt, you hit the nail on the head. There are lots of activities that a driver can engage in that are unrelated to the operation of the vehicle. Demagogue politicians continue to pass stupid laws about them, knowing that mush-brained voters will reward them for being so concerned for our well-being. What a crock. All these silly laws accomplish is to give cops more excuses to pester people who are doing no harm (and of course to relieve them of their money so the government can waste it) and to neglect real traffic law enforcement, which takes more effort. Instead of getting out in traffic and looking for truly dangerous things drivers are doing with their vehicles, like tailgating and erratic movement, the donut-grazers sit on their fat butts staring at their radar, or harass people for engaging in whatever “unrelated” activity the politicians have discovered they can demonize to get votes.

“Pretty woman. Walking down the street.”

I hope they don’t ban that!
