March 8, 2016

The Brown & Milliken Agency and the Holmes Agency, two independent insurance agencies based in Ellsworth, Maine, announced that their firms have merged as of March 1. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The Brown & Milliken Agency has 16 employees and the Holmes Agency has five employees, two of whom are retiring while the other three will continue on with the combined firm.

The combined agency will be called the Brown, Holmes & Milliken Agency.

Both agencies have long histories in the insurance business in the downeast Maine region.

The Brown & Milliken Agency was formed in 2012 when the former Dwight Brown Agency, established in 1941, merged with the former J.C. Milliken Agency, which was founded in 1864.

The Holmes Agency began serving the downeast Maine area in 1868, operating as the John E. & Herbert Fiske Agency, and has been in the Holmes family since purchased by Minnie Holmes in 1908. Blaine Holmes has served as president since 1987.

The Brown & Milliken Agency’s co-owners, President Paul Tracy and Vice President/Operations Manager Patrick Maguire, will continue to be co-owners of the merged agency. The Holmes Agency’s owner and president, Blaine Holmes, is retiring from the firm but will continue in his role as president of the Grindstone Financial Group, an agency aggregator operation made up of 20 member agencies in Maine, including the new Brown, Holmes & Milliken Agency.
