A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit by taxi and limo companies against the city of Newark over what they claim is preferential treatment given to ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft.
The judge ruled Thursday that Newark is allowed to treat the ride-hailing companies differently because they operate differently.
The taxi companies sued last year, claiming Uber and Lyft should have to abide by the same rules as they do regarding background checks and insurance requirements.
The taxi companies say the value of their individual taxi medallions has dropped more than 50 percent since Uber began serving Newark in 2013.
The city argued Uber and Lyft are different because the city doesn’t set their rates and passengers can get information about their driver through their smartphone app.
