Marijuana is now legal for adult use. Ideally adults will use marijuana responsibly. The state needs to prepare for those who are not responsible or respectful of the lives of their neighbors. Driving after marijuana use is dangerous and has proven to be deadly in the states of Colorado and Washington. The fatality rate doubled where the driver tested positive for marijuana alone…the years after legalization. Massachusetts needs more of the highly trained law enforcement specialists specific to driving and impairment…those states that have the highest ratio of DRE to population count, have the lowest death rate specific to marijuana on the roads. That and research into technology to determine who is impaired (not just blood/breath/saliva technology, but actual functions) will help prevent loss of life on our roads. IMMAD is a functional test of of retinal impairment. It is a simple app for law enforcement under development. The science is complex, but the test is not. Short, objective, immediate and sensitive. IMMAD will help officers better protect communities.
Good post Dr Valenti. However these young people of today think they can handle it when they can’t. They think they can text and drive also. What do you do with a weed smoker who is texting and driving at the same time? No wonder Personal Auto carriers are posting record losses now. Reference: State Farm with $7 billion just in 2016.
Here is a clue for you. DUI, whether is it alcohol or Marijuana is a bad thing. Texting while driving is a bad thing. Irresponsible people will be having big issues with their coverage. By the way, wonder why the actuaries missed their models so bad with all the big carriers this year. Man, those algorithms were far out in 2016.
So when you asked “What do you do with a weed smoker who is texting and driving at the same time?”
what you REALLY meant was
“we should make sure to punish drivers who are operating high the same way we punish drivers who operate while drunk”?

Of course you don’t see a difference between someone asking a vague question and making a specific statement.

These guys are dumber than the supposed potheads they cry, mislead, and lie about.
Looks like Trump is throwning Flynn under the bus. Probably trying to save Manafort since he’s been tied to Trump for years. Flynn’s been oddly quiet lately. I wonder if he’s turned State’s evidence? It makes the claim of an anonymous person in the intelligence community to an ex-NSA commentator that Trump was dirty, the classified information was devastating and he would “die in jail” seem slightly more plausible.
We have to put up with Elizabeth Warren, we need pot.
Take a pot lozenge and chill out. It will all be ok.
I don’t think we should listen to marijuana advice from someone who stands firm in his belief that recreational pot leads to heroin abuse.
I think we should.
… and my judgement isn’t clouded by a pot haze hanging over me, like others here…

You can’t be serious with that question, right?
How about we treat them exactly the same as if they were drinking and texting & driving, or inebriated on medication and texting & driving?
DUI/DWI is not limited to alcohol (per the dictionary and case law), nor should it be.

Excessive pot use eventually causes people to lose their ability to concentrate on the subject matter before them.
