Maryland Insurance Commissioner Kathleen A. Birrane has named Gregory M. Derwart as chief of staff for the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA).
Derwart has experience in state government. From 2015 to 2019, he was managing director of Administration & Customer Experience at the Maryland Department of Commerce. During his tenure, he led Governor Larry Hogan’s statewide customer service initiative, conducting research and implementing improvement plans across 40 state agencies, including training, recognition programs, performance metrics and satisfaction surveys.
Derwart also previously served as director of the Division of Administration for the Maryland Transportation Authority from 2005 to 2007.
Immediately prior to joining the MIA, Derwart was chief operating officer at Maller Wealth Advisors in Hunt Valley, Md. During his career, he also served as chief operating officer at the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts and The Arc of Baltimore.
