IAT Insurance Group, a provider of specialty property/casualty and surety products, has hired Joe Buffalano as vice president of Underwriting and Management Liability. Buffalano resides in New Jersey and will be based out of IAT Insurance Group’s Newark, N.J., office.
Buffalano brings more than 22 years of management liability experience to the position as IAT ramps up its launch of a new management liability unit, ML Pro Plus.
Buffalano’s insurance career spans both underwriting and claims. He joins IAT from Travelers Insurance where he most recently served as managing director of the Bond & Specialty New York/New Jersey Metro Region for private and not-for-profit management liability business since 2014.

Prior to moving into underwriting, Buffalano was managing director of claims for New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and St. Louis at Travelers. From 2010 to 2014, he was director of major case liability at Gulf Insurance, managing a team of claims adjusters.
Buffalano’s early career included claims roles at Kemper Insurance, specializing in condo home association and management liability claims. He began his insurance career as a claims adjuster at AIG in 1999 handling error and omission claims.
IAT announced the formation of a management liability unit in October 2019 with the addition of John Passaro to lead the new unit. IAT’s ML Pro Plus unit will specialize in underwriting directors and officers, employment practices, fiduciary, crime and cyber liability focused on private and not-for-profit organizations. The anticipated product line release date is April 2021.
