A Bath Iron Works shipbuilder is recovering after being “critically injured” in a workplace accident in Bath, Maine, according to the Machinists Union Local S6.
Neither the company nor the union would provide specifics on the extent of the worker’s injuries. But the union said he’d gone through several surgeries and procedures since the accident.
“His injuries are some of the most severe Local Lodge S6 has ever encountered,” the union said in a GoFundME online fundraiser soliciting money to provide financial support to the family.
The worker, identified by the union as Garrett Bailey, had a job classification as a yard rigger. That classification’s duties include lifting and moving materials around the shipyard.
A shipyard spokesperson said co-workers, safety personnel and shipyard and city emergency “took decisive action and provided immediate medical attention” when the worker was hurt.
The shipyard is working to provide help to Bailey and his family, and is also working to understand the circumstances to ensure that workers learn from the accident to ensure it never happens again, the spokesperson said.
