CNA Maritime Launches Cargo Insurance Via Internet

September 25, 2000

Cargo insurance, the grandfather of all international property coverage, is about to enter the Internet age with the announcement that CNA Maritime has established “Ocean Marine Manager network interface,” (OMMni), “an automated cargo insurance system accessible over the Internet.”

Designed by CNA Maritime Group, the ocean marine arm of Chicago based CNA Financial Corp.,in partnership with Insurance Systems Inc. of Toronto, “This first stage of OMMni allows potential customers to receive real-time quotes, issue certificates, pay by credit card, and access an array of other convenient policy services, such as on-line reports and e-mail services.”

While currently aimed at smaller shippers, CNA is already planning to introduce the second stage later this year, which “will automate cargo policies for CNA Maritime’s existing customers — usually the larger accounts.”

The system is “available, free of charge, to all agents, brokers and insureds, said CNA. “Agents can have a link set up on their websites that will provide for two-way marketing — customers that access the OMMni site directly will be automatically directed to an agent, while the agent will be able to market OMMni to their customers, particularly freight forwarders.”
