Would the general public and/or investment community be surprised to learn that companies pay these rating agencies for their ratings? If I pay Best tens of thousands of dollars every year to publish my rating, do you think I might be in a position to exert some influence over their rating determination? If I do not like their #’s, I will simply take my business to S&P or one of the other rating agencies.
Is it any surprise that AM Best is trailing the other financial rating agencies in taking negative action. They have the largest pair of rose colored glasses in the insurance industry. Take a look at their trail of missed rating opportunities….Mission, Reliance, Kemper are jsut three of the most prominent…there have been many more. Why they retain their position as the primary reference agency is difficult to fathom.
