Lloyd’s Appoints Janusz First Polish Rep

March 27, 2008

Lloyd’s has appointed Witold Janusz as its first representative for Poland. “His primary role will be working on the process of gaining a full establishment license for Lloyd’s in Poland,” said the bulletin.

Lloyd’s said it considers the country as “offering strong potential opportunities for the Lloyd’s market.”

Assuming that Lloyd’s eventually obtains the license, the announcement stated that “Janusz will take on a more general role as Lloyd’s representative working on business development while maintaining Lloyd’s relationships with the local regulatory authorities.”

Janusz has over 20 years of experience in the Polish market starting his career at TUiR WARTA S.A. in Gdynia, where he became Head of the P&I Claims department. He joins Lloyd’s from HDI-Gerling where he was a member of the board, and prior to that he was vice-president of Sopockie Towarzystwo Ubezpieczeń (STU) Ergo Hestia S.A.

He also serves as vice-chairman of the Polish Maritime Law Association and is a Member of the Working Party on Pollution and Modern Technologies Insurance within the International Association of Insurance Law (AIDA). He holds a Master’s Degree in International Maritime Law from the University of Gdansk and is fluent in Polish, English and German.

Lloyd’s pointed out that it “has a long history of involvement in the Polish market through its work in reinsuring local insurance companies and also as a provider of capacity. The market is currently underwriting a significant amount of specialist property business in Poland and is also involved in a number of niche business areas where there is an increasing demand in Poland including bloodstock, fine art and energy risks such as coal fields and power stations.”

In a recent report from Lloyd’s Market Intelligence, “Perspectives on Central and Eastern Europe”, Poland was identified as one of the markets in that region offering the strongest opportunities for the Lloyd’s market.

Jose Ribeiro, Director of International Markets and Business Development at Lloyd’s, welcomed Janusz to Lloyd’s team, which is led by Enrico Bertagna “our Regional Director for Europe. He has a strong background in the Polish insurance market and his skills and local knowledge will be an important asset to Lloyd’s as we apply for an establishment license in Poland.”

Janusz commented: “Lloyd’s is a household name with a worldwide reputation for specialist insurance. I am delighted to be joining Lloyd’s as its first representative in Poland and look forward to working with the market to develop opportunities in the country.”
