AXA Announces Death of Stefan Lippe, AXA Director, Former CEO of Swiss Re

AXA announced the death of Stefan Lippe, 65, who has been an AXA Director since 2012, and was the former chief executive officer of Swiss Re Group.

Press reports reveal he died of complications from COVID-19.

Lippe spent 30 years of his career to the Swiss Re Group, where he was CEO from 2009 to 2012, when he led the company through the 2008/2009 financial crisis and achieved a turnaround for the company. He became an AXA director in 2012 and chairman of the AXA Audit Committee in 2013.

“Stefan Lippe was a courteous and warm man. His fellow board members and the AXA employees who had the privilege of knowing him will always remember his smile and rigor as a mathematician,” said a statement issued by AXA.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Management Committee of AXA, Denis Duverne and Thomas Buberl express their gratitude and their great appreciation for his many instrumental and decisive contributions to the Group during his eight years on the board. They extend their deepest condolences to his family,” the statement continued.

After his career at Swiss Re, Lippe turned to other activities. In 2011, he co-founded Acqupart Holding AG for which he served as vice chairman of the board of directors, and Acqufin AG. In May 2013, he co-founded and was chairman of Paperless Inc., which was renamed in 2018 as yes.com AG. In October 2013, Lippe was elected as chairman of CelsiusPro AG and between May 2014 and May 2018, he was a member of the supervisory board of Commerzbank AG.

He began his insurance industry career in October 1983, when he joined Bavarian Re, a former Swiss Re subsidiary. Lippe graduated in mathematics and business administration from the University of Mannheim in Germany.
